California Road Trips

If you HAD to choose a single state i which to do your next road trip, my guess is that we could get most people to agree on just two or three. The Los Angeles Times, California's home paper (and probably the third best appear in the country) has put together a fine list of road trip destinations within the state.

Luxury Camping in the Sierras

Filed under: Hiking, United States, Camping A couple of months ago I had the wonderful pleasure of backpacking in California's Sierras Nevadas. Susan Spano of the Los Angeles Times recently hiked just 1 1/2 miles in the High Sierras to spend a couple of nights at the Sequoia High Sierra Camp. Luxury in the High Sierras doesn't come cheap, however.

Climbing Fire Towers in So Cal

To wit: I just came across this article in the LA Times about a writer who spent time checking out the fire towers in and around both the Sierras and the San Bernardino National Forest.
Turns out that the towers are operated by the National Forest Service and most, says the article, are open to visitors.

Arnold Loves Butts

Multicultural Fresno

Filed under: Cultures, United States I just got back from a weekend in Fresno, California. Ordinarily, Fresno is a place you pass through on the way to the western side of the Sierra Nevadas. I've posted before about Fresno and how it is often ridiculed as an armpit of California by those who don't bother to stop and check it out.

Backpacking in California's Sierras

One member of our party even felt so bad he hiked out in the morning (which is the best cure for altitude sickness, a disease that can actually be fatal in extreme cases). I must be getting old because even though altitude sickness can kick in at 8,000 feet, 11,000 feet still isn't very high.
